About The It Kicks! Foundation
In 2015, the Black and Fournier families came together when Energy North (EN), which is owned by the Black family, acquired Haffner’s from the Fourniers. One big thing both families had in common was their longstanding history of philanthropic support for the Merrimack Valley and its surrounding areas. Given the families’ decades of giving to dozens of charitable organizations in the region and strong belief in giving back to their communities, Energy North decided to establish the It Kicks! Foundation in 2023.
Serving communities in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, the It Kicks! Foundation provides grants to nonprofits that focus on supporting youth development and educational opportunities for people of all ages. It was named “It Kicks!” to honor the iconic kicking donkey that has been part of the Haffner’s logo since 1933. Throughout the years, “It Kicks” has been used to describe everything from the extra boost in Haffner’s gas to the extra mile employees go to deliver amazing customer service, so it was a logical choice for the foundation’s name.
